The difference between indoor, outdoor and greenhouse CBD flowers

By Quentin, CBD hemp grower – updated October 2026

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Indoor gives dense, consistent flowers but uses a lot of energy.
  • Outdoor follows the seasons: one harvest a year, often more complex aromas, especially in living soil.
  • Greenhouse protects the plants from bad weather while still using sunlight.
  • How the plant is grown matters as much as where: living soil or mineral fertilisers changes the aroma profile the most.

Indoor, outdoor, greenhouse: what do they mean?

These three words describe where the hemp plants grow. Indoor means growing inside, with lamps, ventilation, and temperature and humidity set by the grower. Outdoor means growing in the open field, following the sun and the weather. Greenhouse means growing under cover: the plant gets natural light but is sheltered from rain and wind.

I grow outdoors and in a greenhouse myself, in living soil and without pesticides. Here is how I compare the three as a grower.

Indoor flowers

Indoor growing lets the grower control every parameter: light, temperature, humidity. The flowers are generally dense and consistent from one harvest to the next. In return, the setup is expensive and electricity use is high, which shows in the price. Many indoor grows use mineral fertilisers; the aromas are then often sharp but less nuanced than in living soil.

Outdoor flowers

Outdoors, the plant follows the seasons and gives a single harvest a year. The flowers are often airier and darker, with lighter brown stems. The weather matters a lot: a wet autumn can ruin a harvest. When the crop is grown in living soil with organic fertilisers, the plant draws on soil full of life and expresses more varied aromas. That is the path I chose, described in the article on living soil growing. All our outdoor CBD flowers are in one collection.

Greenhouse flowers

The greenhouse is a compromise: natural light, but protection from rain and wind, and the ability to manage airflow. It allows a calmer harvest when autumn turns damp, where a plant left in an open field risks mould. The aroma profile then depends, as elsewhere, on the soil and fertilisers.

What really changes the result: the growing method

Where the plant grows explains only part of the difference. An indoor plant on mineral fertilisers, an outdoor plant in living soil and a greenhouse plant on organic fertilisers will not have the same aroma profile. Terpenes, which give flowers their smell and taste, are also built from the richness of the soil (learn more about the entourage effect). So when reading a flower's label, look at two things: where it was grown and what soil and fertiliser were used.

How to choose

If you want very dense flowers with a consistent look, indoor is a good fit. If you prefer more nuanced aromas and cultivation close to the seasons, go for outdoor or greenhouse. The criteria are detailed in my guide to choosing a CBD flower. In every case, check that the THC level stays below 0.3%.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between indoor and greenhouse?

Indoor is grown inside under artificial light; greenhouse is grown under cover with sunlight, which uses less energy.

What is the difference between outdoor and greenhouse?

Outdoor grows in the open air with no protection; a greenhouse shelters the plants from rain and wind, which limits the risk of mould.

Is outdoor CBD better than indoor CBD?

It is not a question of one being better: they have different qualities. Indoor offers density and consistency; outdoor in living soil often offers more complex aromas.

What does "greenhouse CBD flower" mean?

Hemp flowers grown under a greenhouse, with natural light and protection from the weather.

CBD products are not medicines and are intended for adults only.
