The essentials in 30 seconds
- Cannabis withdrawal is real but rarely dangerous: symptoms start 1 to 3 days after stopping.
- They peak between day 2 and day 6, and usually fade between day 4 and day 14.
- Sleep can stay disturbed for up to about a month.
- If stopping is hard, professionals can help for free in France (CSAPA, Drogues Info Service).
Stopping cannabis after months or years of regular use can bring unexpected sensations: nervousness, restless nights, low appetite. I am not a doctor, I grow hemp. This article gathers what specialised sources say so you know what to expect. It does not replace advice from a health professional.
What is cannabis withdrawal?
Withdrawal is the set of reactions of body and mind when someone stops regular use of cannabis containing THC. It reflects a dependence that is mostly psychological, with a physical part. Long played down, cannabis withdrawal syndrome is now recognised: according to Psychomédia (in French), it has been in the DSM-5, psychiatry's reference manual, since 2013.
What are the symptoms of stopping cannabis?
They fall into two groups. Psychological: irritability, nervousness, anxiety, low mood, loss of appetite, sleep problems. Physical, less common: headaches, abdominal pain, tremors, sweating, chills.
It is common: according to Maad Digital (in French), 35 to 75% of people who seek help to stop develop withdrawal. Intensity depends on how much was used and for how long. Sleep problems (insomnia, waking at night, vivid dreams) are often the most persistent.
How long does cannabis withdrawal last?
According to a review published on ScienceDirect, symptoms start one to three days after stopping, peak between day 2 and day 6, and usually fade between day 4 and day 14.
| Period | Main symptoms |
|---|---|
| Days 1 to 3 | Irritability, anxiety, insomnia, sweating: symptoms build up |
| Days 2 to 6 | Peak: headaches, restlessness, low mood |
| Days 7 to 14 | Physical signs ease, sleep stays fragile |
| Weeks 3 to 4 | Mild anxiety, occasional cravings, sleep returning to normal |
These are guidelines: they vary from person to person.
Why does the body react this way?
Regular THC use lowers the density of CB1 receptors in the brain. After stopping, they return to near-normal function in about four weeks, which is why most symptoms disappear within a month. Cravings can last longer. Unlike alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal, stopping cannabis is not life-threatening, but it remains demanding.
How to get through it
A few general pointers: moderate physical activity, regular meals, a calm evening routine to protect sleep, relaxation techniques such as heart-coherence breathing, and above all not staying alone. Talk to someone close or to your doctor.
In France, free and non-judgmental support is available through:
- CSAPA (addiction care and prevention centres), with multidisciplinary teams;
- Drogues Info Service (in French), which guides people who want to stop cannabis;
- your GP, especially if symptoms disrupt daily life.
What about CBD?
CBD is not a medicine and does not treat dependence or withdrawal. I grow CBD hemp and will never claim it helps you stop: that is a matter for health professionals. If you are curious, our article on neo-cannabinoids explains why some products sold as alternatives deserve caution. Our CBD flowers, for adults only, contain less than 0.3% THC.
