Frozen Hash CBD: What It Is and How to Choose It (Complete Guide)

By Quentin, CBD hemp farmer in France – updated October 2026

"Frozen" hash gets a lot of attention, and not always for good reasons. The name refers to a cold extraction technique that produces some of the most aromatic resins there are. But the same word is used both for legal CBD hash and for THC products that are illegal in France. In this guide, we cover what frozen hash really is, how it's made, how to tell CBD frozen hash from THC frozen hash, and how to spot a quality product.

Frozen hash in 30 seconds

  • Frozen hash is a resin made from frozen plants: the cold makes the trichomes brittle, so they can be separated from the plant without any solvent.
  • There are two methods: ice water extraction (bubble hash, ice-o-lator) and cold dry sifting (frozen sift, static).
  • CBD and THC frozen hash are completely different: the first is made from hemp and is legal in France if it contains less than 0.3% THC; the second is an illegal narcotic.
  • Good frozen hash is blond to amber, never green, highly aromatic, and comes with a lab analysis.

What is frozen hash?

Frozen hash is a cold-extracted resin. The plants are frozen, sometimes right after harvest (this is called "fresh frozen"). At very low temperatures, the trichomes, the tiny glands that hold the cannabinoids and terpenes, become brittle and break off the plant easily.

This collects the richest part of the plant without any chemical solvent. The result is a purer, more aromatic resin than traditional hash, often with a creamy texture.

How is frozen hash made?

Ice water extraction (bubble hash, ice-o-lator)

This is the most common method. The frozen plants are stirred in a mix of water and ice, then filtered through a series of bags with increasingly fine mesh. Each bag catches a different trichome size, measured in microns (written "u" or "μ"). The resin is then dried slowly, in the cold. We explain this technique step by step in our bubble hash tutorial.

Cold dry sifting (frozen sift, static)

No water here: the frozen plants are sifted dry, in a cold room, through screens of different sizes. Some techniques use static electricity to attract the purest trichome heads, hence the name "static". The yield is lower, but the quality can be outstanding.

CBD frozen hash vs THC frozen hash

"Frozen" describes a technique, not a substance. Everything depends on the starting plant:

  • THC frozen hash is made from THC-rich cannabis. It is often far more concentrated than regular hash, and it is an illegal narcotic in France.
  • CBD frozen hash is made from CBD-rich hemp. It is legal in France as long as its THC content stays below 0.3%, which only a lab analysis can confirm.

So CBD frozen hash from a reputable seller should always come with its lab report. For the full legal picture, read our guide: Is CBD legal in France?

Frozen hash vs regular hash vs rosin

Resin How it's made Character
Regular hash Dry plants sifted or rubbed, then pressed More plant matter, milder aromas
Frozen hash Cold extraction from frozen plants, with ice water or dry Purer trichomes, intense aromas, creamy texture
Rosin Flowers or hash pressed with heat, no solvent Very pure concentrate, often made from bubble hash

None of these three methods uses chemical solvents. To learn more, read our guide to CBD resins and our article on CBD rosin.

How to spot quality CBD frozen hash

Good signs

  • Color: blond to amber, never green. A green tint means plant matter.
  • Texture: creamy, slightly sticky, softening with the warmth of your fingers.
  • Aroma: intense and true to the original strain.
  • Purity: no visible plant debris.

Red flags

  • A green color or a dry, powdery texture.
  • A weak, chemical or artificial smell.
  • A spectacular CBD percentage with no lab analysis to back it up.
  • Vague marketing claims like "triple filtered", which guarantee nothing: we explain why in this article.

As with flowers, everything starts with the plant: frozen hash will never be better than the flowers it comes from. Our tips on choosing quality CBD flowers apply here too.

How to use and store CBD frozen hash

CBD frozen hash is best vaporized at a low temperature, around 160 to 180 °C (320 to 356 °F), which preserves its terpenes and avoids combustion. Store it somewhere cool, in an airtight container away from light: heat and air quickly degrade its texture and aromas.

Frequently asked questions

What is frozen hash?

Frozen hash is a resin extracted cold from frozen plants, either with ice water or by dry sifting. The cold separates the trichomes without any solvent, producing a pure and highly aromatic resin. It exists as CBD frozen hash, legal under conditions, and THC frozen hash, which is illegal in France.

Is CBD frozen hash legal in France?

Yes, as long as its THC content is below 0.3%. THC frozen hash, on the other hand, is an illegal narcotic. Always ask for a lab analysis.

What's the difference between frozen hash and regular hash?

Regular hash is made from dry plants that are sifted or rubbed. Frozen hash starts from frozen plants, which yields purer trichomes with less plant matter. It is generally more aromatic and creamier.

What do 73u, 90u or 120u mean?

These numbers give the mesh size, in microns, of the bag or screen that caught the resin. Each size corresponds to a trichome fraction: the middle fractions, around 73 to 120 microns, are generally the most sought after.

How should you store frozen hash?

Somewhere cool, ideally in the fridge, in an airtight container away from light.

CBD products are not medicines and are reserved for adults.
